With that thought in their heads, the whole family got up in a panic and went outside carrying hoes and other tools, not even leaving Madam Wen behind. In the end, only Su Nuan was left at home with her baby niece to look after their own house.
The villagers in Sujia Village were all familiar with the dangers of the winter. In previous years there had been many shoddily built houses that had collapsed because of heavy snow, so for the poor villagers, every winter was a dangerous hurdle where, if they weren’t careful, they knew they might not survive.
In the past, there had been cases of people getting crushed to death when their houses collapsed, which was why Su Yongshun and his family were all carrying tools with them. In the worst case where the siblings had really had the house fall on them, with these tools they at least might still be able to dig them out.
As the family hurried over and saw that Su Tang’s house really had collapsed from afar, their eyes turned red with worry.
“How could this happen? Uncle Chuan only has those two kids left in his family… Fu’an Fuhua, hurry up and try to dig them out quickly, maybe they can still be saved. ” Su Yongshun and Madam Qin ran through the snow while shouting instructions to their two sons.
As soon as Madam Wen and Madam Tong saw that Su Tang’s house had really collapsed, they were also anxious to run up and try to help.
Though it was night time and snowing heavily, there was still a bit of light, so Su Tang saw the family running towards them and she hurriedly opened her mouth. “Brother Yongshun, sister-in-law, slow down, we’re all right.”
When she saw Su Yongshun and Madam Qin stumbling this way through the thick snow, Su Tang realized that they were very worried about her and her brother, so she quickly opened her mouth to ease their fears.
When Su Yongshun and Madam Qin heard Su Tang’s voice, they hurriedly cried back, “Sister Tang, is that Sister Tang? What about Brother Nuo? Are you both alright?”
Su Nuo quickly called back. “Brother, sister-in-law, don’t worry, my sister and I are alright.”
After they heard both of the siblings speak, both of them sounding more or less fine, Su Yongshun’s family were finally able to calm down a bit. Madam Wen and Madam Tong supported their mother-in-law Madam Qin while, at the same time, Su Fu’an supported Su Yongshun, and Su Fuhua blazed a trail through the snow at the front.
When they had nearly reached the gate of Su Tang’s house, they could finally see the brother and sister pair standing outside in the snow. The two children looked normal, both neatly dressed in cotton-padded clothes, but the scene around them was strange. They were up to their thighs in snow, and looking behind them it was easy to see that their house had clearly collapsed.
“Aunt Tang, Uncle Nuo, we heard a loud noise just now. Are you both alright?” When he was this scene, with the roof of the house behind them fully caved in but the two children themselves standing outside hale and hearty, Su Fuhua was very surprised.
“We’re alright. I heard something strange just before the house collapsed, so I quickly woke Xiao Nuo up and dragged him outside, and we were able to escape. I was just thinking about packing up and heading into town, and then you all arrived.” Su Tang saw the questions in his eyes, so she explained with a smile.
In fact, being honest with herself, Su Tang felt very warm in her heart when she saw that Su Yongshun and his family had all come over despite the frightening blizzard and the late hour.
“That’s good, that’s good!” Su Fuhua’s fingers that had been tight on the hoe in his hand finally loosened, and he smiled and breathed a sigh of relief.
Just then, Su Yongshun and Madam Qin also arrived. When they saw that Su Tang and her brother standing there, looking healthy and neatly dressed, all of the tension they had been feeling finally evaporated and they nearly collapsed on the ground. “Good, good! If something had happened to the two of you then Uncle Chuan wouldn’t be able to rest in peace.”
“We’ve worried you, brother, sister-in-law.” Su Tang and Su Nuo hurried over to support the two tired elders.
Madam Qin quickly regained her spirit and said to the siblings, “Since your house is already like this you don’t have a place to live. Sister Tang, Brother Nuo, you two should come back with us for now. Tomorrow you can have your nephews come and fix up the roof for you.”
Although it could still be considered ‘night time’ right now, it was actually only an hour or so until dawn, which was why Su Tang had planned to just directly take her brother into town. After all, there were places they could live without any trouble in town.
So, hearing Madam Qin’s invitation, Su Tang hesitated for a moment before saying, “The weather is too cold to repair a house these days, we should wait until it gets warmer.”
