When Su Yongshun saw the annoyed parents who came to find him, he had placated them briefly and then went out to find the siblings. While he waited for them to return he had time to think things through. After all, this had all happened from that same Su Tang that had not shown any timidity in front of many adults earlier today. Now, even her mischief seemed to have been limited, probably intentionally.
It didn’t matter whether she had been sending a warning or had just been out for revenge, she had done it in a way that made it hard for anyone to say anything back to her.
Su Yongshun started at Su Tang for a while. Finally, he could only say, “Well, Sister Tang if you go do this sort of thing you might end up offending some people accidentally, you could suffer a loss in the end. Probably, you shouldn’t do this kind of thing anymore in the future.”
In the end, he couldn’t help but try to persuade her but Su Tang just laughed when she heard his persuasion.
“Brother Yongshun, you’re a kind man, but it’s not as if I did what I did because I wanted to offend anyone. You know, today, it’s not like I couldn’t have talked about how my brother and I were treated at Su Yonggui’s house in the past. We just didn’t want to go out of our way to say it all out this time. After all, we did used to be family, so we should at least save them some face. Like that, didn’t I avoid offending them nicely?”
“But my brother and I haven’t offended anyone before, have we? So how do you think such a trivial accusation without any reason behind it become so large?”
“Brother Yongshun, you should know that these things happen because they all look down on us. They see that we lost our mother when we were young, and that our own father doesn’t take us seriously, and that our fate was so adverse that even the River God didn’t want us, and it makes them feel comfortable looking down on us.”
“In their eyes, even if my brother and I have long been adopted, we should still live the same way we did in the past. So when our lives slowly improve in front of their eyes, they suddenly can’t stand to see us.”
“But it is impossible for me to personally answer their doubts and suspicious every single time. Today, all that happened was my brother went outside wearing new clothes and he was called a thief and a beggar.”
“Do you want my parents’ to keep their reputation or not? How are we supposed to live in the future if we let things go on like this? All I did was clearly remind other people that my brother and I are the children of the Su Laochuan’s household and show them that from now on we will always be remembering our father’s kindness, observing filial piety, and living a better life.”
Su Tang stared up at Su Yongshun with something hard in her eyes, after all, she had to clearly show her attitude here. Today, she had done everything with a purpose. She had been warning some of those people not to spend all of their time staring at her and her brother. After all, in this village, everyone lived their own lives and no one spent their time watching how other people were living. Besides, did they think she liked going to the doors of people who had nothing to do with her? If she had that kind of time, why wouldn’t she use it to earn more money?
“If they don’t come out to mess with us, that’s fine. We don’t have the time to go out and bother with them either. But if anyone wants to hit us, sorry, but we’ll be hitting back.
“In the past, I used to act soft and timid but the final result of that was being thrown into the Qing River along with my younger brother. If it hadn’t been for our adverse fate, we would already be dead. So, should we just let people bully us?”
“I’m sorry, but we won’t ever let ourselves be easily bullied like that again in the future. That is how I intend to live my life.”
“If anyone comes to say anything to Brother Yongshun in the future, just relay my words to them. As long as they don’t mess with me, I don’t have time to argue with them. Even if they don’t want to make money and live a good life themselves, I’m not like that. I want to earn money and live a better life.”
“I need every second of my time so that I can earn the money I’m going to use to send Xiao Nuo to school, so they are not important to me at all. And, in the future, for their own good, it would be better if our paths did not cross.”
“I don’t care if the ones who come after us are children, whether they were used or whatever other excuses they might have. As long as I see someone stretching their fists out to us, I won’t hesitate to hit them back.”
Su Yongshun listened quietly to Su Tang’s words. His feelings went up and down, from sympathy, to shame, and later to surprise. He realized that Su Tang hadn’t deliberately decided to be naughty today because she just wanted to get revenge, rather her thinking was very deep and intricate.
However, every sentence she spoke really could not be denied. It was true that, in the past, Su Dani and Dalang only knew how to work in silence. And everyone could see the result of that: They had been sacrificed to the River God and, as Su Tang said, if it weren’t for their adverse fate they would both be dead.
