When Su Tang heard the little guy’s question, she knew that he still felt no sense of reality in their new circumstances because he was living too well. Instead of joy, he just felt scared, afraid that things might suddenly collapse like a dream.
So Su Tang nodded firmly and said in a strong voice, “Of course. Plus, your sister will cook you even more delicious foods in the future. Also, it won’t just be the Mid-Autumn Festival. There’s also the Spring Festival and many others. We will spend many festivals together in the future.”
Hearing the firmness in his sister’s tone, the little guy rubbed his slightly reddened eyes and then nodded firmly, “Mhm!”
That night, Su Tang accompanied Su Nuo and told him stories until he fell asleep. Then she sighed. If he hadn’t been so mistreated in the past, why would he feel so uneasy when things were getting better now, instead of feeling happy?
With that sigh, Su Tang was ready to enter the space, but then she saw the orange cat trot into the house. Her eyes widened: ‘You’re back?’
The orange cat hummed and wrote, ‘Despicable two-legged beast, I’m very exhausted.’
‘That will happen if you get some exercise after always doing nothing but lazing around and eating. Anyway, have you found out who Pengmo’s master is?’
Before Pengmo had told Su Tang he wanted her to do some work for his master, and she had agreed. But after that, she felt that it would be better to be a bit more cautious. So today she made some delicious food that the orange cat liked and fed it to him then, when the orange cat was properly stuffed, she had sent it into town to find out some news for her. Since the town was fairly close by, it was able to make the round trip by now.
‘Things are just like Pengmo said, so you don’t have to worry.’ Although he was dissatisfied that a great Divine Beast was being used in this way, the orange cat still told Su Tang everything that he had found out.
Hearing that Pengmo hadn’t lied to her, Su Tang relaxed a little. Since it was like that, she would go and visit tomorrow and see if she could help at all.
After Su Tang got up the next day, she had breakfast with Su Nuo, then cleaned up, and then went to town.
First, she went to Madam Qian and delivered the fish balls, and then she went to find the house according to the address Pengmo had given her.
When Su Tang finally found the place, she happened to see Pengmo at the door, looking out at the disappearing back of a man who was riding off in the opposite direction that Su Tang was arriving from.
“Brother Pengmo!” Su Tang opened her mouth and called out when she saw him.
Pengmo had come out to send Pei Xuan off and, unexpectedly, Su Tang arrived in the next moment. When he saw her he cried, “Miss Tang!”
Since he was so surprised, his voice wasn’t small at all. Not far away, the young man who was leaving under the protection of his escort suddenly reined in his horse and turned back after hearing Pengmo’s shout.
Sure enough, he saw the little girl that he had met a few times standing beside Pengmo with a smile. Although there was some distance between them, he could see her very well. She was wearing her white blouse along with her gray skirt, there were two small white flowers tucked into her hair, and when she smiled two dimples appeared in her cheeks. Her eyes seemed to twinkle as she smiled at Pengmo.
When Pengmo saw that she had arrived, he said happily, “Miss Tang, you really came. Anyway, come on in with me.”
Su Tang nodded, “I wonder how I should address your master?”
“My master’s surname is Song.” Pengmo spoke as he led Su Tang through a handful of small courtyards inside the house.
Pei Xuan saw the little girl smiling at Pengmo while completely not even taking a glance in his direction, and pouted. What was that little money-grubber doing in master’s house? Did she go to his house to make money?
When that thought crossed his mind, he couldn’t help but want to go back and have a look, but before he could a guard stood in front of him and said, “Little ancestor, His Majesty* and the Empress** are both waiting for you, please don’t embarrass us!”
“Tch, how could I dare to embarrass you?” As if a basin of cold water was poured on his head, Pei Xuan clicked his tongue and threw down a sarcastic remark. He looked back one last time but found that he could no longer see Su Tang or Pengmo. With that, he turned his head and rode away from Qinghe Town.
Su Tang had no idea about any of this.
*‘陛下’ is the term used. I think it’s a more generic ‘Your Majesty’
**’娘娘’ is the term used. I feel pretty safe translating it as empress but I’ll go back and edit if it turns out to be wrong
tl note: the title (错过) means ‘missed’ in the context of an opportunity. Like missing a train or a bus, or less literally, missing any kind of opportunity. It’s obviously referring to how Su Tang just barely missed meeting Pei Xuan as he set off.
