As long as it was kept refrigerated, this “creative” hawthorn cheesecake that Su Tang had come up with should probably be fine. Of course, if this were the modern era she could just purchase gelatin and use it to bake her cheesecake, but there was no such thing in these ancient times.
Thus, Su Tang could only use a natural substitute and, as it happened, she had recently harvested a lot of pumila fruits from the space, so she decided she would just try it out to see. Anyway, she already successfully made the cookies for a new product today, so if the frozen cheesecake hadn’t worked out she would have just said forget it.
However, the result showed that they seemed to have been successful. It was still winter, so by letting it sit in an open-air area she could simulate the effect of refrigeration just fine. Originally this sort of cheesecake should have been garnished with blueberries, strawberries, cherries, or the like, but she didn’t have any such fruits on hand. Thus, she could only take out the hawthorn she already had lying around at home. At any rate, she was just trying it out to see, so it was no loss if she failed. If she succeeded, it would prove that she would be able to try out a lot of other flavors as well, and if she failed she would just have to come up with a new plan later.
Baohe and Pu Wei had been listening to all of Su Tang’s directions until now, but when they heard her say to just put the cake outside they were surprised and couldn’t help but ask: “Young miss, does this kind of cake not need to be baked?”
“That’s right, this kind of cake does not need to be baked. This is a new way of making cake with a lot of leeway for how each layer is made. Although you have to use the cheesecake filling as a base and cookies for the crust, you can use various fruits and other things to create different varieties. Later this year where there are more fruits you can keep some aside and play by yourselves to make cakes with different tastes and looks.”
Despite how busy she was Su Tang had decided to make time to teach her servants how to make these two new products. Of course, this was partially because of her promise with Lu Wan’er, but it was also because she knew if she taught this cheesecake recipe then, so long as her servants could use their brains a little, they would be able to make all sorts of different styles of cheesecake. Thus, teaching them this one recipe was tantamount to adding many new products to her cafe.
“Young miss, what kind of fruit is this?” Pu Wei looked at the left-over pumila fruits and asked curiously. After all, she could immediately tell that these fruits that turned sticky and gelatinous when mixed with milk were actually the most important part of this new kind of cake.
“Those are pumila fruits. They have a soothing taste and are good for eating during the summer, but they can also be used like this to create cheesecake.” Su Tang explained.
Pu Wei and Baohe both nodded along to show they understood.
Su Tang asked: “Have you both learned it?”
Baohe hesitated for a moment but then nodded, meanwhile, Pu Wei just nodded directly. From what they could see, this new kind of cake was a little more complicated to make than the previous kinds, but they still felt confident. Getting that reply, Su Tang told them to go ahead and bake all the regular cakes the cafe would need for the day and then start practicing how to make the new cheesecake.
The two girls nodded and quickly got busy again.
Now that the teaching was done, Su Tang looked around and discovered it was still very early. There was a lot of time before Lu Wan’er would be coming to pay a visit. With nothing else to do, Su Tang decided to return to her room and get some rest.
Once Su Tang left, Yu Caihe and Zhang Cuilan came over to watch Pu Wei and Baohe making the new cakes. Once they understood what to do, they also stepped forward to help with the mixing and crushing. One commented, “The young miss is really amazing.”
“En, our young miss is very learned. She really knows a lot.”
“If I had never come to work for the young miss, I would have never believed there was such a magical fruit. I feel like my eyes have been opened.”
Everyone nodded together solemnly. Finally, Zhang Cuilan, the eldest of all of them, cut in and said, “Stop talking everyone. Don’t forget the rules. It’s not easy to live such a good life, I don’t want to lose it.”
“En, who here isn’t grateful to the young miss to be able to live such a good life?” Yu Caihe and Pu Wei nodded along quickly. After all, all of them had very difficult lives before, or else how could they have been willing to become slaves in the first place?
